1. STELLAR Curriculum for P1 to P6

The school adopts the STrategies for English Language Learning And Reading which aims to strengthen the students’ foundation in literacy skills through a variety of learner-centred and developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches using Big Books and authentic children’s text.  The vision of STELLAR is to inculcate in children the love for reading and build a strong foundation in the English Language. STELLAR is currently being implemented from Primary 1 to 5.

P1 and P2 STELLAR teaching strategies include:

  • MLEA (Modified Learning Experience Approach)
  • Learning Centres

P3, P4 and P5 STELLAR teaching strategies include:

  • Supported Reading
  • KWL
  • Writing Process Cycle

2. STELLAR Learning Journeys

Learning Journeys are organised to enrich students’ learning of the Big Book titles read.

P1 Learning Journey to the Singapore Zoo

In line with some of the Big Books in the STELLAR curriculum such as ‘Hairy Bear’ and ‘Walking Through the Jungle’, the P1 students would get an opportunity to visit the Singapore Zoo whereby they would explore and gain more insights of the fascinating world of animals.


P2 Learning Journey to the Jurong Bird Park

In line with the Big Book, Baby Owls, the P2 students would get an opportunity to visit the Jurong Bird Park whereby they would explore the ‘World of Darkness’ where the night active creatures come alive during daylight hours.


3. Reading Programme

Reading is an important skill that needs to be developed in children. The ability to learn about new subjects depends on the ability to read. Hence, it is important to provide an environment and cultivate an interest in reading amongst our students. KidsRead, Reading Comes Alive and Reading Rocks are programmes initiated by the school to cater for the reluctant readers.  These programmes aim to develop the students’ interest and ability in reading.

KidsRead

In partnership with the National Library Board, trained parent volunteers read with reluctant readers weekly after school. There are currently twenty students from P3 who benefit from this programme.

Buddy Reading With Temasek Junior College

In partnership with Temasek Junior College, JC1 students read one-to-one with reluctant readers weekly after school. There are currently sixteen students from P4 who benefit from this programme.

Class Library

All classes are stocked with graded books for students to borrow and to read during Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) sessions. The books in the class library are changed every term or earlier if the students are avid readers.

Pre-Assembly Reading

All students read in the hall during the morning pre-assembly period from 7am to 7.20am. Students read English books on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mother Tongue books on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

4. P4 ALPS (Applied Literature Programme for Students)

Using the children’s literature text James and the Giant Peach, the programme aims to:

  • develop our students to be critical and analytical readers
  • provide opportunities for students to engage in literary writing
  • enable students to express personal judgement as they interact with the text read

5. English HAL Programme

The school has embarked on a Higher Ability Learners (HAL) programme for our P3 to P5 students with the use of the National Geographic Explorer. This programme aims to bring the world to the students’ classrooms as well as develop students to become critical and analytical readers.

Students from the first two classes from P3 to P5 also subscribe to the National Geographic Explorer Magazine. The P3 students subscribe to editions (e.g. Pathfinder or Pioneer) suited for their age. The English teachers use the interactive whiteboard lessons to engage students in reading, comprehension and expansion of vocabulary. They also carry out discussions on the stories, which range from History, Geography to The Environment.

  • 6. P3 – P6 LRD (Little Red Dot)

    Students from P3-P6 subscribe to the Straits Times ‘Little Red Dot’. Besides using the articles in the LRD to generate discussions on current issues with students, teachers also use the articles in LRD as teaching resources to create cloze passages and comprehension questions.

    7. Workshop for Parents

    Workshops will be organised by the teachers from the English Department to allow parents to gain a better understanding of the strategies/ approaches adopted in school so as to reinforce and guide their children at home.

    Lower Primary English Workshop for Parents

    The Primary 1 and Primary 2 parents will be invited to attend a workshop on ‘Developing Your Child’s Interest and Ability in Reading’. Through this workshop, the parents will learn strategies on how to better engage their children in reading as well as improve their reading abilities.

    Upper Primary English Workshop for Parents

    The Primary 3 and 4 parents will be invited to attend a workshop on ‘Comprehension Strategies’. The parents will be shown how to guide their children in understanding a comprehension passage and strategies to answer various types of inferential questions. The Primary 5 and 6 parents will be invited to attend a Composition Writing workshop whereby parents will be introduced to the SPACE model as a guide to composition writing.

    8.Whole School Approach to Effective Communication

    As part of the Whole School Approach to Effective Communication, BGPS introduced programmes to help students communicate more effectively. P1 students carry out Show And Tell regularly in class. P2 students focus on Storytelling and P3 students are taught drama skills. Selected P5 students, with the guidance of their teachers, produce and present a weekly ten minute show called BGPS Scoop on happenings in Singapore and in school; on interesting Science and Mathematics concepts and An Idiom of the Week

    All the English-Medium teachers have also attended twelve hours of training on effective communication and all teachers carrying out the P3 drama lessons are trained in using drama as pedagogy in the teaching of English.
